What are the types of dental emergencies?
Several types of dental situations require emergency dental care and treatment from a general dentist or dental surgeon.
Infectious dental emergencies
Among other conditions, this category includes:
- dental abscesses,
- toothaches,
- infections related to the wisdom teeth.
The signs that allow you to recognize a tooth infection are manifold. Discomfort swallowing or breathing through the mouth, fever, swelling or other symptoms leading to a general deterioration in your condition.
If you are suffering from this type of emergency, make an appointment immediately with a dental surgeon for urgent care. Avoid self-medicating, as this could lead to complications.

Trauma-related dental emergencies
Among other conditions, this category includes chipped, broken or knocked out teeth. However, even without visible signs, an impact or any damage can cause a root fracture. The displacement of a tooth from its bony socket is also possible. This can lead to serious consequences, such as pulp necrosis, abscess, or tooth discoloration, needing urgent care.
If your tooth is recoverable, place it in a preservation medium, such as a bottle of milk. This will help to avoid any bacterial infection. It is important to take the tooth by the crown and avoid touching the root, which is more sensitive to bacteria.
Then, go to your experienced emergency dentist as quickly as possible. The longer you wait, the less likely you will be to recover your tooth.
Dental emergencies that cause bleeding
This type of dental injury may occur following a trauma or a procedure at the dentist. Put pressure on the wound with a tissue or gauze and go to the dentist as soon as possible.
If you feel a severe pain, you can take painkillers that will relieve your dental pain, if applicable. However, you should avoid taking aspirin.

How to prevent dental emergencies
To prevent dental emergencies, daily brushing (2 to 3 times per day) is important. It is also recommended to go to the dentist once a year for a dental health checkup and a routine cleaning.
What to do if you have a dental emergency
If you have a dental emergency, you should immediately make an appointment with our dental clinic to avoid complications. Our team offers emergency dental service with same-day appointments from Monday to Friday.
If your medical emergency occurs during the night and our dental practice is closed, you can go to the hospital for your injury.
