What is gingivitis and what is periodontitis?
Gingivitis and periodontitis are caused by an accumulation of bacteria in the mouth. These bacteria feed on food residue.
This causes a buildup of dental plaque. This eventually turns into tartar, which can then cause an inflammation of the gums. This is known as gingivitis.
The Symptoms of Gingivitis and Periodontitis
The main symptoms are bad breath, as well as red or white gums that are swollen and painful. If gingivitis is left untreated, over time, it can affect the bones that support the tooth. This is known as periodontitis.
This can eventually cause tooth loss. Don’t hesitate to consult your dentist if you think you are suffering from gingivitis or periodontitis.
How to Prevent Gum Disease
Maintaining good oral hygiene helps prevent gum disease. This can be done by brushing your teeth regularly (twice a day) and using dental floss. This prevents the buildup of tartar, which attacks the gums.
An annual dental cleaning at the dentist can also prevent gum infections. This includes a scaling as well as a polishing of the teeth. This allows the gums to be treated properly by preventing the bacteria from damaging the tissues.
What are the gum disease treatments offered by Clinique Dentaire Lorraine?
Root planing and dental curettage are among the gum disease treatments offered by Clinique Dentaire Lorraine. These are used to remove the bacteria and tartar that are lodged in the periodontal pockets and along the roots of the teeth.
Dental curettage first removes the tartar found on and under the gum. Root planing then makes the surface smooth to prevent bacteria from accumulating on the tooth.
Gum Skin Graft
Gingivitis can end up causing receding gums. At that point, not only the gum, but also the tissues surrounding the tooth could be affected. This is when it becomes necessary to perform a gum skin graft to solve the problem. This involves removing a portion of the tissue from the palate to graft it onto the loosened teeth.
Dental Extraction as a Last Resort
The bone around the tooth may be so damaged that it is no longer capable of performing its functions. At that point, the only feasible treatment is dental extraction.
Before proceeding with the dental extraction, the dentist takes x-rays. Following the operation, you will have to bite into a sterilized dry tissue for 30 to 45 minutes. For 24 hours after the procedure, you will have to avoid smoking, rinsing your mouth, or cleaning your teeth around the extraction area. You will also have to avoid eating or drinking for 2 hours following the operation.
