How much is a teeth cleaning and exam at the dentist?
The price range for teeth cleaning and exams at the dentist can vary greatly, but it’s usually between $185 and $300. If it’s only for a routine checkup, the price will be lower. It’s recommended to have teeth cleaning carried out every 3 to 12 months to avoid the risk of cavities.
How long is a dental cleaning?
Your dental cleaning is normally planned for 60 minutes, depending on the amount of work that has to be done. However, because most cleanings include a dental checkup, you should plan on spending up to two hours. This will also allow you plenty of time to complete any documentation that may be required.
What are the steps involved in teeth cleaning and exams at the dentist?
Initial Exam
This is a first examination to detect potential health problems and check the integrity of the teeth. This is also an opportunity to ensure that previous dental restorations, such as dental fillings or veneers, are still in good condition.
Dental X-rays
This step reveals what the naked eye can’t detect. A potential tumour, a hidden cavity that requires a dental extraction, or a gum disease—everything goes. Several types of dental X-rays are available and make it possible to observe the mouth from every angle.
In addition, it’s important to note that the technology is highly advanced, and the radiation level is minimal. A series of X-rays is equivalent to less than 30 minutes of sun exposure, so there’s no need to worry!
Cleaning of Dental Plaque and Tartar Buildup
Dental plaque is a natural phenomenon that consists of microscopic bacteria and calcium phosphate present in the saliva. Even with exemplary oral hygiene, dental plaque always builds up.
That’s why dental cleanings and checkups are essential. Equipped with the right tools, your dentist will be able to scrape and remove the plaque that has accumulated on your teeth. Tartar also builds up quickly and hardens over time. The longer you wait, the harder it will be to fully remove it.
Polishing
Polishing softens the surfaces of the teeth and helps clean dental plaque and stains. The process isn’t dangerous for thinning the tooth as long as you follow the recommended number of visits. The polishing paste is made of very fine grains that don’t damage your enamel.
Flossing
Dental floss then comes in to complete your oral cleaning. Since the toothbrush only covers the front and back of your teeth, up to a third of them can only be reached by floss. This is the favourite hiding place for tartar, which hardens 24 to 36 hours after setting in. So, don’t forget to floss regularly until your next visit.
Dental Exam
Now that your mouth is clean, a thorough examination follows. Using mirrors and dental x-rays, the dentist will make sure that there are no problems to report. If there are any, they will let you know the options available to you.
